In 1556, Georgius Agricola, a German physician who became fascinated with minerals published a handbook on mining called De Re Metallica. In the book which focused mostly on mining practices, Agricola summarized his observations on the metallic sulfide ores in the region of Saxony, Germany, and proposed the first classification of mineral deposits.
